Wildflower tours

Western Australia is known throughout the world for its wildflowers and every year more and more visitors from overseas come to see what all the excitement is about. Experience carpets of pink, white and yellow flowers, roadside bushes just laden with colour, and rare species such as the wreath flower.

The abundance of wildflowers is dependent on climatic conditions. Some years are more spectacular than others although, even in the poorest seasons, flowers can still be seen.

Apart from the magnificent wildflowers found in this area, these tours will also introduce you to the goldmining region of the Murchison where many towns, large and small, once thrived after gold was discovered in 1892. The most significant of these was Cue, which had a population of 10,000 and was described as the 'Queen of the Murchison'. It had 13 hotels, many grandiose stone buildings and a 'gentlemen's club'. Today the town's population is 300 but slowly increasing as buildings are renovated and the town conserved as an example of a Western Australian gold rush town for tourism.

Most of the other gold rush towns were deserted as miners tried their luck elsewhere when gold ran out. It is still possible to see the old ruins of a house or two and the introduced plants of cottage gardens amongst the wildflowers.

Beyond Cue is Walga (or Walganna) Rock, which is Western Australia's answer to Uluru. It is a magnificent natural large rock and home to Aboriginal rock art. Everlasting flowers of pink, white and yellow carpet the red earth surrounding this amazing structure.

Remember - it is illegal to pick wildflowers in Western Australia and there are heavy fines for this offence.
