One of these tours covers an exciting aspect of Western Australian history, while the others show you the great trees, granite rock bays and the beautiful inlets in the nearer parts of our southern coast. The town of Albany was the first British settlement in Western Australia. In 1826, 60 soldiers and convicts arrived on the Amity to set up a military outpost and a short-lived penal colony. Before long the whaling industry became the focus of the town, with its port and harbour significant for troop shipments during the wars and as the entry for many gold seekers heading to the eastern goldfields. The Historic Gold tour follows in the footsteps of gold prospectors who trekked to the goldfields from Perth. Gold was discovered in the Kalgoorlie-Boulder area in 1893, heralding a rush of men from other Australian colonies, which were experiencing a severe economic depression, and from overseas. Apart from exploring the history of goldmining in Australia's richest gold region, we can also appreciate the importance of 'liquid gold' and the engineering brilliance, which went into getting water from the west coast to this arid region. |
